Data annotation tools for images, video, text and 3D point clouds

Data annotation tools are where your team draws the labels a model learns from in images, video and text, and in 3D that means a box around every car, cyclist and person in a cloud of 126,002 laser points like this one. We compared 28 tools, checked against their own docs, including which ones can label point clouds at all.

    Price
    Start: $0 a month, one user, 100 documents a month. Essential: $74 a month. Growth: $299 a month.
    The catch

  6. 6

    Kili Technology

    Kili Technology · Commercial

    7/8 checks

Teams labeling images, video, PDFs, text or geospatial imagery who want multi-step review, consensus and honeypot checks, with an on-prem install on Enterprise.

    The catch
Pro's base price leaves out the advanced toolboxes: point cloud, video and medical tools at full limits are paid add-ons, and point clouds alone add €399.
  9. 9

    INCEpTION

Eclipse Foundation incubating project, originally developed at the UKP Lab, TU Darmstadt · Open source (Apache-2.0)

    7/8 checks

Data annotation software: what to check first

Data annotation software differs most on six points, and checking them in this order saves the most time.

  1. The data you label. A tool built for photos may not open text, audio or 3D scans at all, so every entry above lists what its own docs say it handles, and we keep separate lists of image annotation tools, video annotation tools and text annotation tools.
  2. Where it runs. Browser tools such as VGG Image Annotator and Make Sense keep files on your computer, self-hosted tools such as Label Studio's Community Edition run on your own server, and platforms such as Labelbox and SuperAnnotate run only in the vendor's cloud.
  3. AI-assisted labeling. A model drafts the labels and a person fixes them; 15 of the tools on this page document an assist built on Meta's Segment Anything Model (SAM).
  4. Review and QA. Once more than one person labels, you need a review step, reviewer roles or agreement scores, and free editions often leave them out; our data labeling platforms list only includes tools that document one.
  5. Export formats. Check that the tool exports what your training code reads, such as COCO or YOLO for detection, because some platforms export only their own JSON.
  6. The price model. Prices run from free and open source to per-seat plans, usage credits and sales-only quotes, and 5 of the tools on this page print no price for any paid plan.

Free and open-source data annotation tools

Free and open-source data annotation tools now cover most kinds of data: 11 of the tools on this page publish their code under an open-source license. You can run them without a contract, read the code and keep your files on your own machines, but the hosting, upkeep and team features are yours to handle.

Free plans on commercial platforms are a different deal, with limits that end the free ride. Labelbox gives 500 Labelbox Units a month, Kili Technology's Free Trial plan stops at 100 assets, Roboflow's Free Tier comes with 10 credits a month, and Labellerr's free Researcher plan is for students and researchers who apply.

AI-assisted annotation tools

AI-assisted annotation tools, also sold as auto annotation or automatic annotation, use a model to draft labels that a person then checks. The draft comes from one of three places: a pretrained detector such as a YOLO model, a promptable segmenter such as Meta's Segment Anything Model that turns a click or a box into an outline, or your own model connected through an API.

  • X-AnyLabeling bundles a large model library, from SAM versions 1 to 3.1 to YOLOv5 through YOLO26, and runs it on your own computer.
  • Label Studio connects to a separate machine learning backend, with ready examples for SAM, Grounding DINO, OCR and spaCy.
  • Roboflow bills its AI labeling tools in credits, the same credits that pay for training and storage.

Drafted labels still need a person's review, so look for a tool that shows which labels came from a model and lets a reviewer accept or reject them.

Audio annotation tools

Audio annotation tools mark speech, speakers and sound events on a waveform, and 15 of the tools on this page document audio support, led by Label Studio, Labellerr, Datasaur Data Studio, CVAT and Kili Technology. VGG Image Annotator's version 3 labels audio offline in the browser, Prodigy handles audio regions and transcripts on your own machine, and Kili Technology lists audio as a beta.

3D point cloud and LiDAR annotation tools

3D point cloud and LiDAR annotation tools let you draw cuboids and label points in scans from LiDAR and depth sensors, and 11 tools on this page document it, led by Label Studio, Labellerr, CVAT, BasicAI and Supervisely. On several platforms 3D costs extra: Encord lists point clouds as an add-on to its Team plan, Labellerr shows LiDAR files only on Enterprise, and Label Studio includes them only in its paid editions. X-AnyLabeling added point cloud labeling to its free desktop app on October 1, 2026.

Medical image annotation tools for DICOM

Medical image annotation tools open DICOM scans, and some also open NIfTI volumes and pathology slides; 6 tools on this page document medical image support, led by Label Studio, Labellerr, Supervisely, Encord and SuperAnnotate. V7 Darwin keeps stored data in the EU and lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and HIPAA on its security page, while Encord sells DICOM and NIfTI labeling as a Team plan add-on. A HIPAA claim on a vendor's page is a starting point; ask for the audit report before you upload patient data.

Data annotation tools FAQ

These data annotation tools FAQ answers use the same checked facts as the list above.

What are data annotation tools?

Data annotation tools are programs for adding labels to raw data: boxes around objects in photos, tags on words in a sentence, time ranges in audio or cuboids in a 3D scan. A machine learning model then learns from those labeled examples.

Which data annotation tool is best?

The best data annotation tool depends on your data and where it has to run. For a free, self-hosted start across many kinds of data, look first at Label Studio, which passes all 8 of our documented checks and has a free Community Edition; for images on one computer with nothing to install, try VGG Image Annotator; for a managed platform with review workflows, compare Labelbox, Encord, SuperAnnotate, V7 Darwin and Kili Technology in the list above.

Are there free data annotation tools?

Yes, free data annotation tools include open-source projects such as Label Studio's Community Edition, Labelme, VGG Image Annotator, X-AnyLabeling, doccano and INCEpTION, plus free plans on commercial platforms such as Labelbox and Roboflow.

What are the main types of data annotation?

The main types of data annotation follow the data: bounding boxes, polygons, keypoints and segmentation masks for images; tracked objects and time ranges for video; entity spans, categories and relations for text; transcripts and speaker turns for audio; and cuboids for 3D point clouds.

What file formats do data annotation tools export?

Data annotation tools most often export COCO JSON and YOLO text files for object detection, Pascal VOC XML for older pipelines, and JSONL, CSV or CoNLL for text. Most also keep a native JSON format that holds every label type, and some platforms export only that.

Do I need a data annotation tool or a labeling service?

A data annotation tool is software your own people use, while a labeling service supplies the people. Some platforms on this page sell both: Labelbox and Kili Technology list optional labeling services next to the software, so a team can start with the tool and add outside labelers later.
