Video Annotation Tools

Video annotation tools label objects and events across frames, so one box can follow a car or a person through a whole clip. These 18 tools document video labeling, most of them with tracking, interpolation between keyframes or time-range labels.

    VGG Image Annotator (VIA)

Visual Geometry Group (VGG), University of Oxford · Open source (BSD-2-Clause)

    4/8 checks

    Runs
    On your computer
    Price
Free under the two-clause BSD license, for academic and commercial use.
    The catch
No AI-assisted labeling, and features are split: VIA2 handles images only, VIA3 adds video, audio and shared projects.

Video annotation software: the features that save the most time

Video annotation software saves time in three ways, and a tool that lacks all three turns a short clip into thousands of separate images to label with the image annotation tools instead.

  1. Keyframes and interpolation. You box an object on a few frames and the tool fills in the frames between; CVAT lists object tracking with interpolation, and Encord fills labels between manual keyframes in videos and image sequences.
  2. AI tracking. A model such as SAM 2 follows the object for you: CVAT uses a SAM 2 tracker, SuperAnnotate's video tool tracks with SAM, Encord's SAM 2 tracks forward and backward across frames, Labellerr pairs SAM 2 tracking with box interpolation, and Labelbox's video editor tracks a box 10 frames at a time, or through to the end of the video.
  3. Time-range labels. Actions and events get a start and an end instead of a box: VGG Image Annotator labels temporal segments, Vidat labels actions, and Roboflow labels video segments for action recognition.

Free video annotation tools

Free video annotation tools include open-source editions you host and browser apps that keep videos on your computer. CVAT's Community edition and Label Studio's Community Edition track objects in video on your own server; VGG Image Annotator's version 3 and Vidat label video in the browser with files kept local; and X-AnyLabeling labels and tracks objects in video on the desktop. Free hosted plans from CVAT Online, Roboflow and Supervisely also take video, within limits such as Supervisely Community's cap of 50 video files; VisionRepo lists video only on its $200-a-month Ultra plan.

Exporting video labels

Exporting video labels is where several platforms get narrow, so check the format before you label. V7 Darwin's COCO, YOLO, Pascal VOC and CVAT XML exports don't carry video labels, so of the formats V7's export table rates, only Darwin JSON keeps them, and Dataloop's COCO, YOLO and Pascal VOC converters handle images only, keeping just the first frame of a video. CVAT exports a dedicated CVAT for video XML format, and X-AnyLabeling exports MOT, a common format for tracking benchmarks.

How to label video at scale

Labeling video at scale mostly means not labeling every frame by hand. Sample frames when the content changes slowly, box objects on keyframes and let interpolation or a tracker fill the rest, and send the tracks to a reviewer who scrubs through at speed. Long videos also strain storage and the browser, so check a tool's limits on file size, video length and the number of video files on your plan.

Video annotation tools FAQ

These video annotation tools FAQ answers come from the same checked facts as the list above.

What is video annotation?

Video annotation is labeling objects, actions and events in video so a model can learn to detect, track or recognize them. It adds time to image annotation: each object keeps an identity across frames, and events get a start and an end.

Can AI annotate videos?

AI can annotate videos as a first pass. Trackers such as SAM 2 follow an object you mark once, and interpolation fills the frames between your keyframes, but a person still reviews the tracks, because a tracker can drift or switch objects when they cross.

Is there a free video annotation tool?

Yes, free video annotation tools include CVAT's open-source Community edition, Label Studio's Community Edition, VGG Image Annotator version 3, Vidat and X-AnyLabeling, plus free plans from CVAT Online and Roboflow.

What's the difference between video annotation and image annotation?

The difference between video annotation and image annotation is time. Image annotation labels each picture on its own, while video annotation links labels across frames, so the same car is one track instead of thousands of separate boxes, and actions can be labeled as time ranges.
